Respiratory therapists, also known as respiratory care practitioners, work with patients that suffer from respiratory or cardiopulmonary disorders. They properly evaluate and deliver the necessary treatments. They often work under physicians in hospitals. Patients can range from treating premature infants with undeveloped lungs to terminally ill patients on life support.
1) Deciding to become a respiratory therapist
You must understand what you are trying to before you invest all your time to be one. Ask established practitioners questions you may want answered. A little time spent here will save you time and money should you decide to switch careers in the future.
2) Now you should decide on going to a college
Only an associate’s degree is necessary but you will have a easier time finding a job if you decide to get a 4 year degree or a masters. With the higher degrees, you’ll have higher chance for mobility upwards. Make sure you go to an accredited school.
3) Pass the licensing exam
In all states except for Alaska and Hawaii, you will need to be licensed. In order to do this you will need to pass the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) exam. Make sure you check your state’s other requirements. The exam is 160 multiple choice questions, and you will be given three hours to complete the test.
4) CPR certified
You will also need to possess CPR training and certification. This is a relatively easy class.
5) Now go find a job.
Now you will have everything that you need to enter the work force as a respiratory therapist.
6) Optional- Continue your education
You may want to continue your education and get your bachelors or masters degree. This will not only lead to salary increases and promotions but as well keep you educated on the latest techniques and procedure in order to help you as a therapist.
7) Optional- Registered Respiratory Therapist
When you finish your bachelors, you can take this test for more credentials but you must’ve passed the CRT exam.
